My "Useless" Faith

After reading over Christina's summaries (which were brilliant) I came across a quote I quite liked.  When discussing the eternal and tabooed arguments of Politics and Religion, she quoted the quote "Without compassion all practices and beliefs are useless and empty".
Hmmmm.
This quote immediately made me think of a personal connection.  I, and those who know me would agree, would never label myself as a deeply religious person (gasp).  That point aside, I will happily attend church and have respect for those who thrive on it.  I lack this internal impetus that others will define as compassion for my religious beliefs. Does that make my beliefs useless and empty?

How do you live in this sinful world with respect to the established political order?

As a Christian you
1 are opposed to capital punishment. (Could you be Attorney General of Texas?)2 believed in racial integration when General of segregation was the law. (Could you be Attorney Georgia in 1950?)3 believe that abortion is immoral of and should be against the law. ( Could you be Attorney General the United States?)

(Christians and Politics by Kenneth Cauthen)

Can a christian ever be completely detached from his beliefs when it comes to his political beliefs? Doesn't your religious beliefs help you form your political beliefs? How can there ever be change in morally motivated issues such as segregation in the the 50s if politics and religion are to remain separate? It seems religion helps change the beliefs of the individual to change the beliefs of the society.

Examples from the Gospel

The Wedding at Canaan

Jesus' miracle at this wedding was a proclamation fo his divinity. He wanted this spiritual message to be part of the secular world, or he would not have executed such an event in public. His miracle helped support the success of a social gathering, implanting divine or religious actions into the society. Jesus did not seperate society and religion or politics and religion, he combined them.

Summary

Ch. 13 "Politics and Religion"

-In Jesus' time there was no such thing as Church vs. State. If one's religious values did not translate into their political or social outlook, all the opinions of that person where considered hypocritical and worthless.

- Major political Jewish groups had their roots in religious convictions, such as the Zealots and the Pharisees.

- Jesus wanted to create a social revolution, in order to do that he would have to change all parts of society. Among these are politics and religions.

-When Jesus declares he does not want to overthrow the Roman government (as many thought the Messiah was supposed to d0), he does not mean he doesn't want to liverate Israel. Jesus saw that the ultimate liberation Israel needed was from itself and the corruptness, selfishness, and hypocricy in its society. That was more constraining than any government. That is why he did not attempt to take down the Romans.

-Jesus wanted to get rid of any type of oppresion. Jesus wanted to instill compassion into the lives of the Jewish poeple because, "without compassion all [] practices and beliefs are useless and empty [whether they are political or religious].

-When the Bible speaks of useing violence it change it does not mean physical harm but it means using different manners to achieve that change, like not using the laws, like changing the beliefs of each individual to change a society.

Summary

Ch. 6 "The 'Kingdom' of God"

-the Kingdom is not within us it is around us. This is a mistranslation that has lead to many theological misconceptions.

-people around Jesus' time did not have a conception as heaven as a place for the after life. Heaven was a synonm for God. Therefore when the Gospels speak of the Kingdom of God they are not refering to our perception of heaven as the after life.

-the Kingdom was meant to be an actual kingdom or society where God's morals and believer's ethics were ingrained into the infrastructure.

-The Kingdom of God is when heaven's values are present in this world.

-Jesus saw the world a ruled be Satan (a regin of evil). The Kingdom of God

A Man for All Season

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX0_FGu8v9A&NR=1\

Sir Thomas More would not grant permission for King Henry VII to seperate and form his own church apart from the Catholic Church because he felt that it went against his religious beliefs and personal ethics. He lost his life for this "treason". His actions mirror Jesus' own in that he saw no segregation between politics and religion.

Kingdom

In the section Title “Kingdom of God” Nolan discuses what he believes the kingdom of God actually is. He formulates his answer through question such as-- Is it something that resides within us or something that is around us? Do we choose to take part in the Kingdom? and Will the kingdom come after a after the great catastrophe or as an alternative?--- My questions are What is your idea of the Kingdom? and What kind of guidelines or parameters due you use to create your idea of the Kingdom? Is it time, personal ability to relate, a saving grace……..
